Winter Park Recommendations

  • What do we do in Winter Park in the summer?

Yes, it’s true, our favorite Winter Park activity is skiing!  Even though this won’t be an option in June, the area is full of other outdoor activities.  We are listing a few ideas here and encourage you to find even more.  Remember, you are at altitude so sunscreen and water are essentials.  Colorado is known for fast changing weather so a sunny morning can quickly turn into an afternoon thunderstorm – rain jackets are a good idea for longer adventures.

    Hiking

Probably our favorite summer activity, there are so many fun trails around Winter Park and Granby.

Columbine Lake:  this hike starts from the Junco Lake Trailhead.  We often bring a picnic lunch to eat by the lake before hiking back down to the car.

King Lake:  this hike starts from the top of Rollins Pass.  It is a bit of a drive up a dirt road to get to the hike, but the views are definitely worth the extra effort.

    Mountain Biking

Summer is a great time for mountain biking in Colorado.  At the base of the resort, you will be able to rent bikes and then either ride or take the lifts up to the top of the mountain.  You can also rent bikes at Ice Box in Fraser and ride on any of the numerous local trails.  If you are looking for a more leisurely or kid-friendly ride, you can ride from the town of Winter Park to the base of the ski hill.

    Winter Park Base

From the base of Winter Park, there are lots of fun summer activities including mini golf, mazes for kids, rock climbing and a great alpine slide.  There are also restaurants at the base of the mountain good for fueling continued playing.

    Other activities:

Fraser Valley Rec - a fun pool, climbing wall, gym and basketball courts.

The Foundry – bowling and movies.

YMCA of the Rockies at Snow Mountain Ranch – horseback riding, swimming, hiking, roller skating.

  • What about food? Where can we eat?

There are lots of restaurants in the area - many we haven't tried.  Most often, we eat at the house because the best food is the food Nick's mom Janet cooks!  When we eat out, here are a few of our favorites.

    Breakfast:

    Carvers

    78336 U.S. Hwy 40, Winter Park, CO, 80482

Traditional American breakfast with a good bakery.  (Nick used to order 5 chocolate covered raspberry strudels for breakfast!)

    Mountain Rose Café

    78542 U.S. Hwy. 40, Winter Park, CO 80482

Also a traditional American breakfast.  Or, as they put it themselves, “redneck country fusion with a dash of hippie love.”

    Lunch:

    Sharky’s Eatery

221 Doc Susie Avenue, Fraser, CO 80442

Good burgers and fries.  A small restaurant that can be really fun.

    Rudi’s Deli

78699 Main St, Winter Park, CO 80482

A mom and pop sandwich shop… yum!

    Dinner:

    Hernando’s Pizza Pub

    78199 U.S. 40, Winter Park, CO 80482

A very popular Italian restaurant know for their pizza.  Their unique wallpaper is made entirely of $1 bills from happy customers.

    Smokin’ Moe’s Ribhouse & Saloon

65 Cooper Creek Way, Winter Park, CO 80482

Classic BBQ… Colorado dining complete with select Colorado microbrews.

    Tabernash Tavern

    2287 U.S. 40, Tabernash, CO 80478

For a fancier dinner, this is one of our favorite spots (we even went here to celebrate the night we got engaged!).  Their menu changes frequently with seasonal dishes and international flavors.
